ArgentinaArgentina’s wine industry has boomed over the past ten years, and its rapid modernisation means there are a wide range of producers of different sizesand different winemaking concepts around the country. There has been agreat deal of international investment in recent years, as winemakers as diverse as Michel Rolland and Marilisa Allegrini have been lured by the great potential that exists in the country’s high altitude vineyards.By far the best-known region, Mendoza, has over 150,000 hectares ofvineyards, giving huge variation in grape variety and style even within the one region. Malbec, of course, has staked out a convincing claim as Argentina’s flagship variety, and the different expressions we list show just how versatile it is, and how sensitive it is to Mendoza’s different soils and altitudes. But other varieties – particularly Bonarda and Cabernet Sauvignon – are now showing just how well they have adapted to Mendoza, something that makes Argentina as exciting now as it was when we first ventured into it a decade ago. |
